How To Start Your Health and Fitness Journey

Hey there!! So you’re probably here looking for a rulebook or blueprint explaining how to start your health and fitness journey, detailing what to do and how to do it. I wish something like that existed but to be honest, it doesn’t, as we all have different things that work for us and things that don’t. I can however provide insight and suggestions on how I started my own healthy lifestyle and how to sustain it.

Here’s 3 basic steps in the right direction..

1. First thing you’ll need on this path of health and fitness is Determination and a Goal.

Just like almost anything, when you want to embark on a new journey or task, you’ll first have a goal in mind (because any thought without a goal is just a dream). Then in order to achieve that goal, you program your mind to do everything in your power to achieve it. Thats where determination comes in.

I started my health and fitness journey with a 30 day challenge. For me, in order to develop consistency, I figured that if I can manage to  adopt a habit of going to the gym and consuming healthy meals for 30 consecutive days (no excuses) I could definitely survive living this life. This happened in January, through extreme cold and snowy days and I completed it and when the 30 days were up, I kept up the mojo. Afterwards, It felt weird for me to not be in the gym at least 4 times a week and my taste buds had completely adapted to my new eating habits.

2. Schedule/Plan

Life can definitely get hectic with work, school, relationships, etc. and 24 hours may not seem like enough time to get in everything you want to accomplish for the day. This is why it is highly imperative to plan your day or week to ensure that you are able to complete what you set out to do. Perhaps meal prepping on a Sunday or one of your less busy days and setting a schedule to workout early mornings, right after work, or late evenings. It’s hard work at first but don’t worry, in due time, it’ll all feel normal, pinky swear.

3. The Process

Document It– I learned this a little later in my journey and I never realized how essential it was until I compared before and afters i.e pictures, body statistics, weight etc. Documenting your process shows you the micro progress you think you aren’t making. It can serve as a source of motivation when you feel like quitting and if you’re like me, it allows for celebrations when you achieved smaller goals.

Trust It– Trust every part of your journey and in no time, the healthy mind, body and soul will emerge. I started noticing internal changes such as easy breathing during sprints and going up the stairs in as little as 3 weeks and external changes such as muscle definition and fullness, in 2-3 months.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the phrase “Nothing great happens over night” and it’s true. Great things takes time but I promise you, this a lifestyle habit worth having and your body will thank you for your efforts.
